Ann Coulter calls for the US to ban entry to people living with HIV
January 16, 2018Ann Coulter, controversial right wing political commentator, took to Good Morning Britain to defend the Trump administration and declare her own bold policy ideas. A leak from the White House earlier this month had President Trump referring to African countries as “shitholes” and that Haitians “all have AIDS”.
“He specifically insulted these countries, in a sweeping generalisation,” presenter Kate Garraway said on the show, “He must know how those comments are going to be received. Some people are not just questioning the intention of his comments or the colourful language, but some of the facts. For instance, he’s been accused of making an offhand comment about ‘all Haitians have AIDS’. Now actually, that’s not true. It’s a much smaller percentage of people. It’s language he knows will insult and it’s not even factually correct.”
Coulter rebutted that “I don’t think it’s factually incorrect… On the AIDS point… of course he didn’t say ‘all’, but it’s astronomical and they’re very close to us. We have an immigration policy that won’t discriminate on the basis of AIDS. It’s a very communicable disease! That’s one of the things we’ve got to be taking into account.”
Coulter’s comments come just a month after the Trump administration dismissed every member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Six members of the council had already resigned in June citing the administration’s complete lack of awareness of the issue, that they simply “do not care”. All of this following the quiet dismantling of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, which failed to continue after the Presidential transition.
