Ann Widdecombe Criticised by London Mayor and Others for Claiming Science Could “Cure” Gay People

Brexit MEP Ann Widdecombe has drawn a slew of criticism for her comments in a Sky News interview last Sunday where she claimed it could one day be possible for science to “cure” gay people.

“The fact that we now think that it’s quite impossible for people to switch sexuality doesn’t mean that science may yet produce an answer,” she said, defending an article she wrote in 2012 in which she said “unhappy homosexuals” were being denied the chance to “investigate any possibility of seeing if he can be helped to become heterosexual.”

“But will science ever find an answer to Anne Widdecombe?”retorted Stephen Fry on twitter.

“She may have changed her party, but she hasn’t changed her stripes,” added Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. “Ann Widdecombe is still peddling homophobic, bigoted, anti-LGBT and anti-science nonsense.”

“Sadly, science has yet to provide a cure for bigotry, homophobia or, indeed, stupidity,” wrote Alliance Party MEP Naomi Long.“If we could cure those, LGBTQ+ people would be much less likely to be unhappy and much more likely to be accepted and treated as equals.”
