Anonymous Gay Footballer Deletes Twitter Account

The Twitter account claiming to be a secretly gay, well-known football star has been deleted after the account user set a date for his coming out, reports Sky News.

He had previously said he would come out during a press conference today (Wednesday July 24), but cancelled just hours before.

“I thought I was stronger. I was wrong,” he posted yesterday on Twitter.

“Call me all the names under the sun, belittle me and ridicule me, a lot will, and I can’t change that, but I’m not strong enough to do this.

“Just remember that I’ve got feelings, without coming out I can’t convince anybody otherwise, but this isn’t a hoax. I wouldn’t do that.”

“It’s actually upsetting,” said Amal Fashanu, niece of Britain’s first and only openly gay male footballer Justin Fashanu.

Justin came out in 1990 but was dropped by his team and suffered an intense media backlash. He then died by suicide in 1998.

“Have we made it that bad—the environment in football—that no one can actually come out?” Amal asked Sky News.

When asked whether she thought the account was legitimate she said: “he could be gay and, actually, has been going through really bad times.”
