Arthur Creator Hits Back at Alabama For Refusing to Air Gay Wedding Episode

Marc Brown, the 72-year-old creator and executive producer of the children’s television show Arthur, has expressed his disappointment at Alabama Public Television (APT) for refusing to air the 22nd season premiere of his show, which features a gay wedding.

In the episode, Arthur and his friends attend the same-sex wedding of their teacher Mr Ratburn. The episode first aired across the United States on May 13, but was not shown by the APT because they claimed it would be “a violation of trust” to the parents who depended on them to air family-friendly content.

“I’m really proud of that episode. And I will defend it to anybody who wants to talk about it,”Brown told People magazine.

“Why shouldn’t their teacher marry another man? We all know people who are gay, who are trans, and it’s something that is socially acceptable. Why is there this discomfort that it takes a leap into our national media?

“I don’t want children or people who are different to feel excluded. That’s not the kind of world we want to live in. And we want children to be educated so they can see there’s not just one type of family. Everyone should feel represented. I think we did that with Arthur.”
