Asia Could Be Set to Have Its Own Eurovision in 2019
November 1, 2018The Asia-Pacific region could be about to have its own spin-off of the Eurovision song contest, Australia’s 9News reports.
The Asia-centric spin-off has long been rumoured, but recent accounts have a December 2019 launch as the likely start date.
The spin-off would feature artists from 16 countries, culminating in a “three-hour live broadcast of the grand final.”
Australia’s Gold Coast is tapped to host the inaugural event, at the Convention and Exhibition Centre from 30 November – 7 December 2019.
“The inaugural Eurovision Asia Song Contest will be a close replica of the international Eurovision Song Contest. Involving high-profile artists from 16 Asia Pacific countries, the [event] will highlight song writing and performing talent to the region and the world,” the report states.
“The event will draw on the Eurovision Song Contest’s established rules and codes of competition, showcasing exceptional production values and visual design.”
Reportedly there are “negotiations are underway with high-profile international performing artists from the Asia Pacific region regarding their interest and involvement in the inaugural event.”
Countries that are rumoured to take part include China, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
