'Ask Bobby' Directory launched to support LGBTQ+ mental health in honor of Strictly star Robin Windsor

In a touching tribute to the late Robin Windsor, a beloved former "Strictly Come Dancing" professional, a new online directory called "Ask Bobby" has been launched to provide vital mental health support for the LGBTQ+ community. Windsor, who tragically passed away in February 2024 at the age of 44, was a passionate advocate for mental health awareness. The directory aims to honor his legacy by creating a comprehensive resource for those in need.

Created by Windsor's close friend and former partner, Davide Cini, "Ask Bobby" is envisioned as a "one-stop-shop" connecting individuals with LGBTQ+-affirming mental health charities, community groups, and sporting organizations. The directory, developed by We Are Loved, seeks to combat the disproportionately high rates of suicide and mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.

According to the BBC, Marc Svensson, founder of We Are Loved, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that he knows of 22 people from within the community who have died from either suicide or drugs in the last two years. Research indicates that LGBTQ+ individuals are significantly more likely to experience mental health issues due to factors such as discrimination, isolation, and lack of access to affirming resources.

"Signposting people to their community or group of people that might share the same interests or hobbies might be a really good way to combat loneliness and isolation which is rampant in the LGBTQ+ community," said Svensson.

The directory has already garnered support from businesses like The Weekending, an LGBTQ+-friendly gym in London. Founder Fabio Pozzetto highlighted the importance of creating healthy alternatives for community connection, stating that his gym provides a welcoming space for individuals to combat isolation and build supportive relationships.

"There are many people who suffer discrimination and isolation and this is a place where everyone feels very welcome," he added.

Matty Lamy, a gym attendee, shared his personal experience of finding solace and community at The Weekending, describing it as his "second home" after struggling with isolation during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Davide Cini expressed his hope that "Ask Bobby" will serve as a lasting tribute to Robin Windsor's commitment to supporting the mental health of the LGBTQ+ community. "Robin would be really proud that we are doing this in his name," he said. "I think it's the legacy that myself, Robin's family and friends would like for him, so he can keep shining a light and help people within our community who are struggling."

"Ask Bobby" is currently in the process of building its directory, with organizations encouraged to register and join the effort to provide crucial support to the LGBTQ+ community. The directory’s filter and search functionality will be activated as soon as a sufficient number of organizations have been added.
