Former Australian Prime Minister and leader of the no campaign in the country’s recent postal survey for marriage equality attended the wedding of his lesbian sister this week. His sister, Christine Forster, had been with her partner, Virginia Flitcroft, for over ten years and have six children together. Abbott was a vocal deponent in the issue, criticising same sex couples and their ability to raise a family.

“I want to strengthen the family, I want to support the traditional families because it’s better for kids, if possible, to have a mother and a father,” He said in a radio interview during the survey, “As everyone knows, my distinguished and much-loved sister Chris is on the other side of this argument. Chris has been a very good mother with her partner Virginia, they do a good job, but nevertheless, I’m old-fashioned enough to think kids do best with a mother and a father… Certainly, we all need male and female role models in our lives and normally the best male and female role models in our lives are our mother and a father.”

The two reportedly had fallen out during the campaign with Christine accusing him of avoiding her calls. There was speculation as to whether we would even be invited to the wedding.

Christine and her partner wed in a ceremony in central Sydney, the wedding had over 200 in attendance including friends, families, and drag queens. The ex-PM spoke at the wedding, saying: “It’s a great family occasion, very happy for Chris and Virginia and I’m looking forward to having a new sister-in-law.”
