Axe Abbott Over Anti-LGBT Stance, Government Urged

Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is facing increasing pressure to withdraw from the nomination to become the next President of the Board of Trade, following the UK Government's proposal to appoint him.

Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, said in a TV interview that he has "real concerns about [Abbott]", and how if he was the Prime Minister "[I] wouldn't appoint him".

Abbott's longstanding opposition to same-sex marriage, as well as attitudes towards women - once describing abortion as "the easy way out", reports the Guardian - have earned him hard criticism.

When asked about Mr Abbott's views, Women and Equalities Minister and International Trade Secretary Liz Truss refused to answer questions instead opting to talk about the "absolute hypocrisy" of the Labour Party.

Other senior ministers have expressed mild discomfort with Abbott's views, but have continued to rally around his "suitability" for the role in securing Britain's trade deals post-Brexit.
