Being a mother to an LGBTQ+ child

July 30, 2024

Nairy Y. Santiago, Associate Director, Safety & Environment at MSD guest writes for myGwork about being the mother of a child from the LGBTQ+ community.

Being a mother is a journey filled with love and challenges. Each experience is unique and transformative, and for me, being the mother of a child from the LGBTQ+ community has been a gift that has opened my heart and mind to new perspectives. From a young age, my child showed an innate interest in feminine clothing and accessories, and today, their physical appearance reflects their true identity. Through this experience, we have found happiness and love in accepting their authenticity and building a united and understanding family.

My child's strength and courage inspire us to keep moving forward. Their bravery to be authentic in a world that often rejects diversity is and continues to be admirable. As a mother, I strive to nurture their creativity and support their choice of clothing, encouraging them to express themselves freely. As they grow older, their appearance increasingly reflects their true self, even though this sometimes means facing societal challenges.

The path to acceptance and understanding has not always been easy. We have encountered criticism and prejudices that threatened to undermine our family's core. However, we prioritize the well-being and happiness of our child. We have learned to address negative comments and educate those who may not understand diversity and the importance of respecting each person's identity. These challenges have strengthened our family bond as we face them together and celebrate our victories.

Happiness permeates our home. Seeing my child radiate with self-confidence, unafraid to be their authentic self, is an immense gift. We have become a beacon of love and understanding for other parents and families going through similar experiences.

Let me introduce you to my son Aris, an exemplary student, a wonderful and loving child. But above all else... a person free to be happy! I cannot imagine my life without Aris, and every day that goes by, I am grateful for his life!!!

Being an ally mother to a child from the LGBTQ+ community has been an emotional and transformative experience. We accept and love our child as they are, valuing their authenticity and courage in living their life true to their identity. Our family has grown in love and understanding, and we take Pride in being a support system and advocates for diversity. Through this journey, we have learned the importance of educating and promoting acceptance in our society, ensuring that all individuals can live with love, respect, and happiness as their authentic selves.
