US Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden has had a resounding endorsement from the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), who have cited the former-Vice President's support for the LGBT+ community - including his pledge to sign an Equality Act that would provide legal protections to LGBT+ Americans - as their reasons for backing him in the race for the White House.
"Joe Biden proudly affirms an essential core value of the NGLCC", the organisation's official statement reads, "that we all deserve our shot at the American Dream, and that our economy only succeeds when it is available to all LGBT and allied Americans." The statement, written by President of the NGLCC Justin Nelson.
The statement also gave support to Biden for his plan on how the American economy can begin to recover from the strangling effects of COVID-19, which has affected the nation's economy severely in light of poor Government response.
As the race for the White House gets tenser and tenser, with candidates keen not to take poll leads for granted after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's shock defeat in 2016, both sides of the debate are reaching out to LGBT+ Americans to court their votes this November. Earlier this month, former Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, who is himself gay, came out to defend President Donald Trump's legacy with the LGBT+ community.
As the New York Times reported, the defence seemed opportunistic, given the President's failure to recognise or celebrate Pride Month earlier this year, instead opting to roll back protections for transgender Americans that were ushered in under the Obama administration. With 2 months until polling day, the battle for the vote of LGBT+ Americans continues.
