Big Brother Contestant Comes Out as Trans: Watch the Heartwarming Response

Renowned reality TV show Big Brother made its return to screens over the weekend, with a back-to-classics cast of contestants from all walks of life. Hosted by AJ Odudu and Will Best, the series sees 16 members of the public, named Housemates, live together inside the Big Brother House with no contact with the outside world for a number of weeks. Originally on Channel 4, then Channel 5, the popular gameshow has found a new home on ITV2 and ITVX.

Among the new Housemates is Hallie, a youth worker from South London. Hallie arrived in the house on the Launch Night and introduced herself to the other contestants, but chose not to immediately disclose her identity as a trans woman.

On Day 2 of the show, during the Housemates’ first breakfast together, Hallie called for everybody’s attention and made the incredibly brave decision to come out.

“Hey guys, I just have something to say,” she said. “Yesterday, I feel like I wasn’t being 100 per cent authentic in myself.

“I thought I’d let everyone know I’m trans, if you didn’t know already,” Hallie continued. “I just thought I’d make that loud and clear. I’m a trans woman if you didn’t know.”

The response from the other Housemates was immediately warm and inviting. One Housemate, Chanelle, hugged Hallie and said, “Good for you, that’s very brave of you.” Other contestants also hugged and applauded Hallie.

In a lovely gesture of support, one of the contestants, Olivia, suggested that every Housemate announces their pronouns so as to be sure that no accidental misgendering goes on in their time together. The rest of the House was happy to oblige, each announcing their pronouns one-by-one.

Fans of the show commended the maturity of the Housemates, their positive response to Hallie’s coming out, and how much they embraced sharing pronouns. Many took to social media to comment on how it portrayed how easy it is to support LGBTQ+ people – in particular, the trans community.

Big Brother continues every day on ITV2 and ITVX, with many other LGBTQ+ people and a diverse range of contestants taking part.
