Birdhouse Café: empowering through inclusion

As an I&D Champion and Disability Dimension Lead in my local ERG at RX, I am always on the lookout for equality and for people going above and beyond for others around them. I relocated back to Exeter in November last year and my friend passed the reigns to the little café she used to run onto an outstanding organization, Garland Support.

The Birdhouse Café in Pinces Gardens, Exeter, has become a beacon of support for individuals with disabilities, showcasing a model of inclusivity and community engagement. This transformation began when Garland Support, a specialist care provider, took over the café in April 2024. Garland Support's mission is to offer innovative support to adults with learning disabilities, and the Birdhouse Café has become a prime example of their commitment.

One of the most significant ways the Birdhouse Café supports individuals with disabilities is through employment opportunities. The café provides a friendly and supportive environment where adults with learning disabilities can develop essential job skills. This initiative not only helps these individuals gain work experience but also boosts their confidence and independence. The café employs several service users from Garland Support, who work shifts tailored to their abilities. This approach ensures that each individual can contribute meaningfully while receiving the support they need to succeed. The employment model at the Birdhouse Café is designed to mirror real-world job expectations. Employees are required to adhere to the same standards as they would at any other job, including punctuality and high performance. This realistic work environment helps prepare them for future employment opportunities, giving them a sense of accomplishment and purpose. The café's management, led by Kelly Sharp, emphasizes the importance of treating all employees equally, fostering a sense of belonging and respect.

In addition to employment, the Birdhouse Café offers volunteering opportunities. These roles allow individuals with disabilities to engage with the community, develop social skills, and gain valuable experience. Volunteering at the café helps break down stereotypes and promotes a more inclusive society. The Birdhouse Café also supports individuals with disabilities through creative and artistic opportunities. Service users from Garland Support have contributed to the café's décor, designing striking logos and artwork inspired by Matisse's bird paintings. This involvement not only showcases their talents but also gives them a sense of ownership and pride in their work. The café plans to expand these opportunities by involving service users in baking and preparing some of the café's offerings, further integrating them into the business operations.

Community engagement is another cornerstone of the Birdhouse Café's support for individuals with disabilities. The café serves as a hub for local groups, parents, refugees, dog walkers, and more. By hosting workshops and pop-up events, the café fosters a sense of community and belonging. These events provide additional opportunities for individuals with disabilities to interact with the broader community, enhancing their social networks and reducing isolation.

The Birdhouse Café's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities is also evident in its business model. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, all profits generated by the café are reinvested into supporting Garland Support's services or back into the community. This sustainable approach ensures that the café's impact extends beyond its immediate operations, contributing to long-term positive change.
