Black Gay Playwright Michael R. Jackson Wins Pulitzer Prize

Black, gay playwright Michael R. Jackson has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama for his off-broadway queer musical ‘A Strange Loop’.

As ‘Queer Forty’ reports, the musical depicts a black, gay usher at The Lion King musical struggling to navigate a white, heteronormative world whilest writing about a black gay usher at The Lion King musical. In real life, Jackson was a gay, black usher at The Lion King musical.

With his musical, Jackson has become the first black writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for a musical theatre work. The Pulitzer Prize was announced via online live-stream due to the coronavirus shutdowns.

Jackson Tweeted of his win: “Never in my wildest dreams. NEVER. IN MY. WILDEST. DREAMS. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my journey to such an incredible honour. I’m sure I’ll have more to say once I’ve caught my breath and looked at all these text messages and emails but for now, THANK YOU.”
