Bollywood’s First Ever Gay Rom-Com Aims To Fight Homophobia
February 20, 2020Bollywood is releasing it’s first-ever romantic comedy with a led gay character, aiming to fight India’s homophobia.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (translation: Be Extra Careful About Marriage) tells the story of a young man, played by Ayushmann Khurrana, fighting antigay stigma in his society and family.
According to the ‘Advocate’, director Hitesh Kewalya doesn’t want to make fun of gay people in this film, as is the case historically in Indian films,
although he does look at it is a comedy. The film is made “in such a way as to make it accessible, and humour seemed to be the natural choice to achieve that,” he said in an interview.
“We have an interesting message — of societal acceptance — albeit in a much more fun manner so that it reaches more people and helps them re-evaluate their pre-conditioned thoughts,” said Bhushan Kumar, chairman of T-Series which co-produced the film.
