Brazil introduces AI-powered platform to combat anti-LGBTQ+ online content

The Brazilian government, in collaboration with civil society organizations, has launched the Platform of Respect, an AI-driven initiative designed to monitor and address anti-LGBTQ+ content online. The platform aims to hold individuals accountable for disinformation and hate speech targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

The system utilizes an AI tool called Aletheia to scan social media, blogs, and news sites for harmful content, including offensive statements regarding biological sex. The project is partly funded by trans politician Erika Hilton.

According to Attitude, the Ministry of Human Rights partnered with the NGO Aliança Nacional LGBTI+ to develop the platform. During the launch on September 16, coordinator Jean Muksen explained that the platform's primary function is continuous monitoring of online profiles and submission of content for legal review.

Muksen stated that the AI tool was developed over 18 months by legal and communications professionals to combat fake news. It is designed to analyze discourse, intentions, and linguistic nuances in Portuguese, including irony and sarcasm.

Content identified as fake news or hate speech is stored in a repository and reviewed by a lawyer employed by the NGO before potential referral to the courts.

Critics have raised concerns about potential impacts on free speech, suggesting the platform could criminalize citizens for gender-critical or fact-based statements.
