Brazil Sees Dramatic Rise in LGBT+ Hate Crimes

October 1, 2018

More than 300 LGBT+ people have been killed in Brazil this year so far, a sharp rise from the 220 last year, LGBT+ group, Grupo Gay da Bahia (GGB)reports.

This number also includes the brutal assassination of political activist, Marielle Franco.

A further 713 anti-LGBT+ hate crimes have also taken place this year.

These alarming figures coincide with a growing conservative political movement in the country lead by the so-called “Donald Trump of Brazil” Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaroonce famously said he was “incapable of loving a gay son” and would prefer that son to “die in an accident.”

The hastag #EleNão (not him) has sprung up across the country in protest to his attempt to become President.
