Buttigieg Rumoured for China Post

Buttigieg Rumoured for China Post

December 11, 2020

Former Mayor of South Bend and former Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg is said to be being considered for the position of US Ambassador to China in the Joe Biden Administration.

Reports claimed that Buttigieg, who is openly gay, had been lobbying for a role in the US delegation to the United States, but Biden revealed Linda Thomas-Greenfield, former Ambassador to Liberia, for the role. Other reports claim that Buttigieg is being considered for Secretary of Transport or a role in the Treasury Department, but these are not confirmed.

The position of Ambassador to China should not be overstepped though: the role historically has gone to experienced diplomats, but many of the post holders have gone on to run for President - including former President George H W Bush, who served before taking office as President. By appointing an openly gay man, Joe Biden would be sending a powerful message to China, which continues to have a domestic conversation about LGBT+ rights, as well as the wider world that LGBT+ people are front and centre in the incoming US administration.

Buttigieg's campaign for President ended shortly after winning the Iowa Primary, in a move that surprised many. He went on to endorse Biden for President, and the favour has been repaid - Biden has often said that Buttigieg reminds him of his own son, Beau.
