Celebrating 2024’s Trans in the City Awards winners

Trans in the City proudly announced the winners of 2024’s Trans in the City Awards at its gala ceremony last week. These awards honor individuals, allies, and organizations leading the way in trans advocacy and inclusion.

For the last seven years, Trans in the City has hosted a gala that brings people and organizations together during Trans Awareness Week to celebrate trans and non-binary people, businesses, charities, and allies. Starting in 2018, with only a few sponsors, Trans in the City has grown from strength to strength, and it's back with its third awards ceremony, hosted by UAL.

This year’s award winners have made outstanding contributions, from pioneering workplace inclusion to inspiring community outreach and allyship. Susie Green, CEO of Anne Health, was honored with the prestigious CEO’s award at the annual gala and awards ceremony last week, in celebration of Trans Awareness Week. The award recognizes the positive impact Susie has had on the trans and non-binary community.

“The CEO’s Award is our most prestigious recognition, reserved for those whose contributions to the trans and non-binary community have been truly exceptional. While each of our awards celebrates dedicated individuals and allies – often the unsung heroes whose impact may otherwise go unnoticed – the CEO’s Award is the pinnacle,” stated Trans in the City CEO Bobbi Pickard. “This award acknowledges those who have not only championed the community but have also made extraordinary efforts, driving lasting change and creating inclusive spaces at an unparalleled level.”

Susie Green has dedicated over 20 years to supporting trans and non-binary youth, leaving a lasting impact through her advocacy and leadership. As the former CEO of Mermaids, she transformed it from a small grassroots organisation into one that internationally defended trans rights.

Susie has tirelessly fought for the wellbeing of trans children and continues to do so today despite the most hideous abuse. Susie’s current work with Anne Health, which focuses on providing trans and gender-diverse people of all ages with timely access to gender-affirming support, is essential to the community.

On receiving the award, Susie Green said, “This is really special to me. I have worked so hard to protect my daughter, and then ongoing to protect other trans kids and over the last few years I’ve seen things going backwards. With the creation of Anne Health with Lizzie Jordan, we tried to do something that took things forward in the face of huge hostility and do you know something? We’re doing it! No matter what they throw at us, I won’t stop.”

This year’s awards winners include some of myGwork’s corporate and community partners, including AstraZeneca and Diversity Role Models. The full list of 2024’s winners (by category) include:

Trans Inclusive Organisation: An award to be presented to an organisation that has been making real change to become a trans and non-binary inclusive workplace.

Winner: Metro Bank

Trans Corporate Champion: A trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming person making waves in the corporate world.

Winner: Abbie Hooper (he/they), AstraZeneca

Trans Community Champion – England: An individual or organization based in England and working with the English trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities as a champion and role model.

Winner: Safe Haven Cornwall

Trans Community Champion – Wales: An individual or organization based in Wales and working with the Welsh trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities as a champion and role model.

Winner: Kate Hutchinson, Diversity Role models

Trans Community Champion – Scotland: An individual or organization based in Scotland and working with the Scottish trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities as a champion and role model.

Winner: Oliver Ellis, Waverley Care

Trans Community Champion: Northern Ireland: An individual or organization based in Northern Ireland and working with the Northern Irish trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities as a champion and role model.

Winner: Trans Pride NI

Trans Community Champion – International: An individual or organization based outside of the UK and working with the international trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities as a champion and role model.

Winner: Rebecca Tallon De Havilland

Trans Community Champion – Student: A trans or non-binary student in higher education (18+) who champions the trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming communities and is active in promoting awareness making change happen.

Winner: Chloe He, University College London

Trans Ally: An ally helping the trans and non-binary community succeed.

Winner: Jackie Swarbrick, Co-founder, Safe Haven

CEO Award: An individual or team of people that have fundamentally made a positive difference to the trans and non-binary community.

Winner: Susie Green, Co-founder & Director of Anne Health & Former CEO of Mermaids
