Christian and Islamic Groups Continue to Advocate for Criminalization of Homosexuality in Singapore

Christian and Islamic groups in Singapore have doubled down on homophobic rhetoric in the wake of India decriminalizing homosexuality, Pink Dot reports.

Both groups fear Section 377A of the penal code will be overturned in the South East Asian island, just as it was done in India.

The Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association (PERGAS) has said repealing the law will threaten “the traditional family unit as the foundation of society,” and that it will negatively impact population growth.

Pink Dot, one of the largest LGBT+ events in Singapore, have called out PERGAS on their comments, saying, “Having 377A repealed will not turn straight people gay and/or stop them from pro-creating.”

Meanwhile, Archbishop William Gohhas been appealing to all Catholics to fight against the repeal of Section 377A “for the future of our families, humanity and society.”

“By accepting homosexual acts as a social norm, the dreadful consequences for the stability of our families, the well-being of our children, and the risks to the common good will be long-term and irreversible,” he said.

“Will the Church be forced to accept the promotion of homosexual values and lifestyles in our schools?” he asked. “And let transgender persons use bathrooms for those of the opposite sex?”
