Christian coalition starts petition to ban same-sex unions in Vanuatu

A coalition comprised of Christians, women, youth groups and local chiefs in the island nation of Vanuatu have come together to start a petition to ban same-sex marriage. Their aim is to show that 99 percent of the population are against gay unions.

The petition states: “Affirmed that God has designed marriage to be a covenantal, sexual, procreative, lifelong union of one man and one woman, as husband and wife, and is meant to signify the covenant of love between Christ and his bride the church.

“We DENY that God has designed marriage to be a homosexual, polygamous, or polyamorous relationship. We also deny that marriage of a mere human contract rather than a covenant made before God.”

The petition follows rumours that several politicians wanted to introduce a same-sex marriage bill to parliament.

Spokespeople from the four big civil society organisations were the first to sign the petition. The Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) was one such organisation. “I have spoken to the Prime Minister (Charlot Salwai), to let him know that we the civil society are opposed to same sex marriage in the country,” said the VCC chairman.
