Commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance at Vodafone

Trans Day of Remembrance is an essential occasion dedicated to honoring and remembering the trans individuals we have lost due to the pervasive issue of anti-trans violence. Each year, it is as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by the trans community and emphasizes the urgent need for collective action and support.

To mark this significant day, Vodafone hosted a meaningful panel discussion featuring several members of the trans community, alongside two parents of trans children. This dialogue provided a platform to share personal experiences, engage in education, and explore the vital role of allyship. The participants discussed not only the challenges faced by the trans community but also the moments of hope that inspire resilience and progress for the future.

Ella Slade (They/Them), Vodafone’s Diversity & Inclusion leader for LGBTQ+ inclusion, shared poignant reflections on the importance of Trans Day of Remembrance.

"Trans Day of Remembrance is such an important day to take the time to remember community members no longer with us. On this day, I am especially grateful to be able to spend time with other trans folk and look forward to the discussion around allyship and hope later on. We need allies now more than ever."

They added:

“The conversation centred around the basic form of allyship – showing respect to one another and just how powerful that can be. It is sad and frustrating that we’re at a point where showing basic respect is something society need to get better at, however hearing the stories of unconditional love and support coming from parents of trans kids was a delight.

We also had a lovely conversation about how we as trans people cope when things get especially tough and I was able to share some of the actions I take such as stepping away from social media, going on a run, watching a comforting film etc.

I hope that the session empowered allies to make that first move to show support, leading with those good intentions, rather than being too nervous to do anything. Every one of us can do something to help and show our solidarity and allyship to our trans siblings.”
