Coronation Street icon Shobna Gulati has shared that they are non-binary in a revealing interview discussing their gender identity, according to ‘Standard’.

The 58-year-old actor, renowned for their role as Sunita in the ITV soap, mentioned that they’ve only recently discovered the language to articulate how they've always felt. “I've become more comfortable describing myself as a person. What do people call it now? Non-binary. So, I suppose that's who I am,” they told Kaye Adams on the ‘How To Be 60’ podcast.

“I've never had a term for it, but I've learned from the younger generation what that word might be, since I know what it feels like to be me,” they said.

The star, who uses “she/they” pronouns on Instagram, also mentioned they are currently in love but would be open to dating men or women in the future. Gulati explained, “Throughout my life, I never had the words for that, and I never managed to explain it. My immediate family hasn't really considered it.”

“They've always just thought: 'Shobna is either extremely feminine or extremely masculine.’”

The actor, known for their role as Anita in the BBC comedy Dinnerladies, shared that they learned about the non-binary identity from a co-worker. “The sound person told me they were non-binary, and I asked, 'What is that?' They explained it, and I thought—'That's how I feel, but I never had that vocabulary.’”

Gulati was awarded an MBE last year for their contributions to the cultural industries.
