The CrossFit Games had previously permitted trans women to participate in the women’s category.
According to the sport’s updated rulebook, that classification has now changed.
Without using the terms “trans” or “transgender,” the CrossFit Games’ new gender classification policy now assigns all competitors to the category that corresponds with their “gender assigned at birth,” according to ‘Out Sports’.
“All athletes are welcome to participate in CrossFit Games events,” states the new policy. “However, to maintain fairness and the integrity of the competition, athletes must compete in the division corresponding to their gender assigned at birth.” Consequently, trans women will now compete in the men's category within the sport.
The CrossFit Games are a competitive series that pits athletes against one another in strength, speed, agility, and other fitness domains. The competition is owned by CrossFit LLC.
A few days ago, the CrossFit Games posted a message declaring, “No matter your city, country, language, or ability, we will gather on the same starting line for three weeks of community, inspiration, and fitness.”
CrossFit joins other sports organisations that have taken steps regarding the participation of trans women in female and women’s categories. Some of these measures, especially in swimming and track and field, have raised concerns among many trans individuals that the anti-trans policies of the new Presidential Administration may inspire additional sports organisations to follow suit.
The discussion surrounding the role of gender in society has intensified in recent years. While some argue for the existence of numerous genders, others have countered this notion.
Currently, sports are largely organised around a gender binary, with male and female categories. Many youth sports do not have gender-based divisions, and even elite sports—such as Olympic dressage and equestrian events—feature men and women competing together.
Furthermore, some events, like the New York City Marathon, have recently introduced a third nonbinary category.
What does the future hold for trans women in the female category of sports? Is there potential for an expansion of gender categories to accommodate trans, nonbinary, and other athletes without scrutiny?
The evolution of sports categories is still ongoing. While CrossFit may place trans athletes into categories that may not align with their identity, the final decision has yet to be made.
