The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has updated its charter to include non-binary people, CNN reports.
Committee members voted to change the rules over the weekend at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois. These new rules are regarding the charter requirement that all committees and bodies of the DNC be equally divided between men and women. The new rules will allow DNC members to self-identify their gender, as well as allowing non-binary people to be included as a third gender (neither man nor woman).
“At the root of our diverse party is a commitment to inclusion and opportunity,” saidDNC Chair Tom Perez. “By adopting this amendment, the Democratic National Committee is ensuring every Democrat feels welcome and embraced for who they are.
“The action reaffirms our solidarity with the LGBTQ community and challenges governments, employers, and organizations across the country to do the same.”
The decision comes during a record high number of LGBT+ people running for elections in the US.
