Department for Education occupied by trans youth in new protest

August 28, 2024

In London, young trans activists have occupied the Department for Education (DfE) to demand improved education and rights for transgender people.

Fourteen members of the Trans Kids Deserve Better network have occupied the DfE in Westminster, advocating for “the right to a safe and inclusive education, and the rights of trans youth and adults.”

According to ‘MSN’, the group shared a flyer on Instagram declaring: “We deserve respect in education and in all other areas of life. We will have our dignity and so will you.”

The network is also advocating for control over decisions related to social transitioning, prioritisation of their comfort and safety, protection from transphobia, respect for their identities, and inclusion of transgender topics in education.

This protest comes after health secretary Wes Streeting extended the previous Conservative government’s contentious emergency ban on puberty blockers for trans youth, citing the Cass Report, which recommended careful evaluation of such medication.

Trans Kids Deserve Better activists are also opposing the DfE’s draft Gender Questioning Children guidance. The network argues that if enacted, it could “potentially violate the Equality Act and harm a whole generation of trans and non-binary children,” according to Freedom.

In July, network activists occupied a ledge at NHS England’s headquarters in central London with a straightforward message: trans kids deserve better. A transgender teenager involved in the protest later called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to “stop weaponising” trans youth.

They expressed in an interview that they were tired of politicians using trans youth for political gain.
