Die Antwoord Have Been Removed From Festival Line-Ups After Accusations of ‘Homophobic Hate Crime’

A disturbing video has gone viral showing Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yolandi attacking, chasing down and yelling homophobic slurs to Hercules & Love Affair’s musician Andy Butler.

The video opens with the message: “This video is for documentary purposes. Homophobic attacks and homophobic violence should be denounced.”

In the video, Ninja is seen shoving and spitting at Butler, who throws a drink in retaliation. Butler escapes after a brief scuffle, as Yolandi shouts: “Run f****t, run. Run for your life b****.”

Since the video has gone viral Die Antwoord have been removed from two festivals in the U.S..

On Sunday, Die Antwoord responded to the video on their page on Facebook and have denied the attack on Butler was a hate crime.

“Ben [Crossman]” former videographer for Die Antwoord who uploaded the video “has cleverly edited this video clip to make it seem like me and Yolandi commited [sic] a hate crime towards a person because they are gay. However, Ben beat up the guy from Hercules himself while filming this same video clip.” they say.

They continue “This was just a fight with someone who fucked with us. Not a hate crime.

This fight had nothing to with the fact that this guy was gay. We don't care about people's sexual preference. Our DJ and best friend DJ HITEK is gay, and a lot of people in our crew are gay.”

Butler has yet to make a statement.
