Disney star comes out as queer

Alyson Stoner, a singer, dancer, and former Disney star has come out as queer in a personal essay for Teen Vogue. In the essay, she explains that she is attracted to “men, women, and people who identify in other ways.”

Stoner has appeared as a backup dancer for Missy Elliot and Will Smith, was on the hit Disney show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and the TV movie Camp Rock with Demi Lovato. Her new single “When It’s Right” has just dropped.

In her essay, she talks about her struggles with her sexual orientation: “I pored over texts, contemporary and ancient, seeking truth and answers from professors, scientists, church leaders, friends, and family. I didn’t want to get this wrong. After all, not only was I trying to be a ‘good and upright’ person, but I’m also a public figure with responsibility and extreme pressure.”

She said she had “internalized some of the harmful beliefs and misconceptions about LGBTQ people and identities.”

It wasn’t until she started dating a woman she started to put the pieces together, “She messed up everything in the best way possible, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

She says she’s being so public about her coming out process to help younger people coming to terms with their own identity: ‘If you’re questioning or struggling with your sexuality, gender identity, or anything else, know that I and so many who’ve gone before us are with you. Whatever your identity, you are lovable and wonderful and enough.”
