Documentary About Myanmar Drag Queen Up for Award

‘Missing Puzzle’, a documentary about a Myanmar drag queen, is up for the country’s biggest film award, GayStarNews reports.

The film follows Pyae’s life across Myanmar’s commercial hub, Yangon. “It depicts a very hard working gender queer individual,” filmmaker Hein Htwe Maung told Gay Star News. “Who’s assistant manager by day, drag queen by night and English tutor on weekends.”

“The protagonist’s story resembles a lot of my own and many others of Myanmar’s queer community. I hope this film sheds a light on the issue.”

The film is up for Best Documentary at the Wathann Filmfest, and will be screened at colonial-era Waziya as part of the festival.

Homosexuality is still illegal in the country under section 377 of the penal code, the same British colonial era law India recently overturned. While the law isn’t strictly enforced, LGBT+ people still face discrimination and stigma because of it.
