Drag queens protest Trump’s arrival in UK

The US President’s first official visit to the UK has been met with mass protests, a giant baby Trump balloon above Parliament, and a throng of angry drag queens. The drag queens carried signs and shouted slogans condemning Trump’s LGBT+ record, specifically calling out his attempted ban on transgender people serving in the military.

Iraqi-British drag performer Amrou Al-Kadhi explained why she was protesting: “I feel like Trump paints people of colour like me and muslims and queer people, as really weak and as vulnerable—just parasites on the nation. But what I think today is gonna show is how strong we are.

“The signature of the drag protest is the fact that we’re showing that we’re not weak, we’re not going to be silenced by that level of fascism. At a time of such fearmongering, drag queens provide hope, at a time of such nightmarish politics we provide humour, and at a time of people feeling really, really scared I think drag just provides strength.”
