Drag Race Star Valentina Opens Up About Gender Identity: “I’m My Own Gender”

January 15, 2019

RuPaul’s Drag Race favourite Valentina has opened up about her gender identity in a new interview with Out Magazine.

“I identify as nonbinary,” Valentina told the magazine.

“I don’t completely feel like a man, I don’t completely feel like a woman. I feel like a goddess. I feel like I’m my own gender.”

While identifying as non-binary, Valentina wishes to use “she/her” pronouns.

Valentina (or James Andrew Leyva as she’s known out of drag) is set to appear in Fox’s live version of Rent at the end of this month.

She will be playing Angel Dumott Schunard and has said her gender identity has helped prepare her for the role.

“I get to bring that aspect to my Angel character,” she said, “and really have an idea of like, ‘Why is she so happy and so confident in her armour, in her drag?’

“I do take the responsibility of being a gay nonbinary drag queen person taking on a really important iconic role like Angel and I hope [audiences] tune in for it.”
