Dublin Bus Shares Touching “Long Road to Pride” Video Sharing Experiences of Older LGBT+

Dublin Bus released a video on Monday (July 1) detailing the experiences of four older LGBT+ people in Ireland.

The video, titled “The Long Road to Pride”, details the experiences of these people as they came to terms with their sexual orientation in a heavily conservative country that only legalised homosexuality in 1995.

One man recalls telling a doctor, “I couldn’t live without affection,” and the doctor replied, “What right have you to affection?”

“I thought I was the only one. Like, why did I have a kind of a weakness?” another man adds.

“When I grew up I didn’t know I was gay because there was no word, I’d never heard of the word.”

All four of them admit they have never been to Dublin Pride: “Dancing in the streets is for the young and beautiful, and should be left to the young and beautiful.”

Dublin Bus then surprises the four with a trip to Pride where they meet their younger counterparts and are honoured on a rainbow double-decker bus.

“[Life] is a journey until you actually shed the loads that you’re carrying, and then you can dance!”
