Dylan Mulvaney makes Broadway debut in SIX: The Musical

In a refreshing move for Broadway representation, transgender advocate and prominent social media personality Dylan Mulvaney is set to make her debut in the acclaimed musical SIX, stepping into the pivotal role of Anne Boleyn. This casting announcement introduces a fresh lineup to the Tony Award-winning production, with Abigail Barlow also joining as Katherine Howard.

SIX has garnered critical acclaim for its innovative and feminist reinterpretation of the six wives of King Henry VIII. Co-created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the musical reimagines these historical figures as a modern pop group, allowing them to reclaim their narratives and tell their stories on their own terms, inspired by contemporary music icons.

Mulvaney and Barlow will join familiar faces returning to the "Haus of Holbein," including original cast members Adrianna Hicks as Catherine of Aragon and Anna Uzele as Catherine Parr, alongside Olivia Donaldson, who reprises her role as Anna of Cleves.

Expressing her excitement on social media, Mulvaney shared her enthusiasm for her Broadway debut. "YAY BROADWAY! So happy my bway debut is playing a fellow polarizing woman in this perfect musical next month," she posted on Instagram, adding, "I hope you all come watch me live my dream I am SO HAPPY I CANT STOP SMILING." She also lightheartedly acknowledged the historical context of her character, Anne Boleyn, as an "iconic controversial woman" famously "beheaded" in 1536.

Mulvaney is no stranger to the stage, having previously toured with Book of Mormon and starred in her critically received 2025 Off-Broadway solo show, The Least Problematic Woman in the World. Beyond her acting career, she has emerged as a significant voice for transgender rights, having publicly documented her gender transition journey since 2022.

A poignant moment in her journey, Mulvaney credits Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth as a profound inspiration. She recounted an encounter in 2010 during Chenoweth's run in Promises Promises, where Chenoweth's encouraging words—"You’re going to sing with me one day and you’re going to do this with your life, I already know it"—motivated her to pursue a career in musical theater.

Following the casting news, the production's X (formerly Twitter) account was made private, restricting access to non-followers. While the Instagram account remains public, comments on the post announcing Mulvaney's casting were notably disabled. This measured response from the production reflects an awareness of the heightened public discourse often surrounding the visibility of transgender individuals in high-profile entertainment roles.
