Elon Musk has announced plans to relocate SpaceX and X out of California due to a law that prohibits schools from requiring teachers to inform parents if their child changes their gender identity.
On Tuesday, according to ‘Al Jazeera’, Musk declared he would move the companies’ headquarters to Texas after California Governor Gavin Newsom enacted a groundbreaking law that prevents policies mandating teachers to inform parents when a student requests to be addressed by a different name or pronouns.

“This is the final straw,” Musk stated on X. “Due to this law and the many others that have come before it, which target both families and businesses, SpaceX will now relocate its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
Musk, who has an adult transgender daughter, mentioned that he had previously warned Newsom “that laws of this kind would compel families and companies to leave California to protect their children.” In another post, Musk added that he would also move X, formerly known as Twitter, from San Francisco to Austin, explaining that he was “done with dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building.”
The world’s richest man, Musk, has increasingly leaned towards Texas, known for its absence of state corporate or income tax and its conservative politics.
In 2021, Musk relocated Tesla’s headquarters from Palo Alto in Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas, and changed his residence from California to Texas. Tesla, the world’s most valuable car manufacturer, still maintains an “engineering headquarters” in California.
Musk, who has become more vocal about his political views since acquiring Twitter in 2022, often criticises policies and public figures he deems overly left-wing or “woke.”
On Saturday, Musk announced his endorsement for Donald Trump for president shortly after the Republican candidate narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
California is known as one of the most liberal states in the US, with the governorship and both chambers of the state legislature controlled by the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Texas remains a conservative stronghold, with all branches of the state government controlled by the Republican Party.
