Empty shop set for “drag school” transformation in Essex

Plans have been proposed to convert an empty shop unit into a school and bar for drag performances, ‘BBC’ reports. The former Co-op located off Long Wyre Street in Colchester, Essex, has been unoccupied for several years and, according to a planning statement, had “made no positive contribution” to the city centre.

Jo Palmer-Tweed, co-partner at The Dragonfly Lounge, mentioned that Colchester is a “drag rich” city in need of a dedicated space for the LGBTQ+ community. She expressed hope that the new venue could be opened by March.

Ms. Palmer-Tweed stated that her goal is to create a bar that is “as inclusive as we can possibly make it,” which would also serve as a school for drag acts.

Natalie Sommers, Colchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection, remarked that the plan is “a testament to the growing diversity and vibrancy of our city.”

Ms. Palmer-Tweed also noted that local residents have been “incredibly supportive,” including the neighbouring museum, Firstsite, which has offered spaces for potential pop-up events.

The planning application pertains to Unit B, previously the loading bay of a Co-Operative department store on Long Wye Street. A planning statement noted that: “The property has been vacant for several years, so has made no positive contribution to the vitality or viability of the city centre in this time.”

The statement added that the venue would be “more than a regular drinking establishment, of which there are many,” aiming to “resuscitate an almost entirely vacant” city centre unit.

The proposals include the installation of internal walls to create spaces for various facilities like an office, toilets, and a cloakroom.
