Equal-Marriage passes in Jersey

The largest Channel Island passed marriage equality today with a vote of 43 to 1. While not part of the UK, Jersey is a Crown dependency and has a self-governing parliamentary democracy with a population of a little over 100,000.

While rejecting an amendment that would give religious business owners the right to refuse same-sex couples, States Assembly members also passed a law legalising Humanist marriages.

Humanist marriages are different from civil unions in that they are deeply personal, specifically tailor to the couple, and recognise humanist values. Humanist weddings are not yet legalised in the UK, though were recognised in Scotland in 2015 and Ireland in 2012.
