Everything Everywhere All at Once Becomes First Queer Female Led Movie to Win Best Picture

LGBTQ+ history was made at the 2023 Oscars this year, as queer-led movie Everything Everywhere All at Once took home the award for Best Picture. The action-adventure film received seven awards in total throughout the night, sweeping across all categories.

2022 saw the release of Everything Everywhere All at Once, an absurdist comedy-action movie written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The story follows Evelyn Quan Yang (Michelle Yeoh) as an overworked, stressed mother who finds herself in a universe-bending scenario.

Though the action and science-fiction elements were heavily praised, the heart of the story comes in the form of her relationship with queer daughter, Joy. Blending genres of intense action, bizarre comedy, complex sci-fi and family-oriented drama, this film still took the time to focus on coming out and associated stigma of shame attached to identifying as LGBTQ+ to older family members.

As well as winning Best Picture, the popular movie also won awards in six other categories. Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay were all dedicated to the film, marking a major night for both Asian and American Asian representation, and LGBTQ+ representation. It also means that Everything Everywhere All at Once is officially the most awarded movie ever, with 165 award wins in total.

It is also the first queer female-led movie to win the Best Picture award, following the queer male-led win in 2016 with Moonlight. Other LGBTQ+ films led by women have been nominated for the category, but have never won, marking a historic achievement for lesbian and queer female representation.
