Executive Order from Biden Seeks to Pursue Trans Equality

An executive order signed by United States president Joe Biden will inspire focus on achieving equality for a range of identities, including race, sexuality and gender identity. The order, signed earlier this year, is dedicated to ‘Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government’, directing the US government to commit their attention to attaining equality among diverse groups.

Chiraag Bains, Deputy Assistant to the President in matters of racial justice and equity, has said that the proactive actions from President Biden demonstrate proof that his early promises to focus national attention on diversity, inclusion and equality are legitimate. Speaking to reporters following the signing of the order, Bains explained the significance of these actions.

"[President Biden signing the order] makes clear that the agencies' work to ensure equity for LGBTQI+ Americans is part of our broader mandate. This is about racial equity, but it is about equity more broadly as well, and that includes for LGBTQI+ Americans as well," said Bains.

He went onto praise Biden for his effective steps in focusing on LGBTQ+ equality, even stating that he “is the most pro-LGBTQI+ president in history.”

“He has spoken directly to the trans kids across this country and their families who are being targeted by Republican lawmakers and legislatures in states across the country, including in the State of the Union address this month,” he continued.

The aspects of the executive order that pertain to LGBTQ+ equality have a particular focus on the treatment of transgender Americans. Biden recently defended the transgender community in response to the stigmatization of them in the media.

Speaking on transphobia and the continued negative stereotypes surrounding the community, he told The Daily Show, “They’re human beings! They love, they have feelings, they have inclinations- I mean, it just to me is - it’s cruel.”

Biden has also previously signed executive orders that seek to act against conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals. The president has consistently shown support for the transgender and wider LGBTQ+ community, defending them through proactive means and verbal condemnation of discrimination.
