Facebook is finally addressing criticisms of promoting “fake news” by introducing a new screening method for its feed. This new method would ask a sample of people to rate the “trustworthiness” of news sites then based on those reviews would promote or demote the reach of those pages. Many in the LGBT+ media have questioned how reliable this method would be and whether it could potentially lead to homophobes deliberating ranking down LGBT+ news sites.
The founder of Q Digital, Scott Gatz, asked Facebook in an open post: “We’ve specifically had to deal with page followers who are anti-gay commenting/flagging posts/etc, we’ve had to escalate to your management. Now I fear that this will be a quiet way for them to make us go away.”
Adam Mosseri, the VP of Facebook News Feed, assured Gatz and others that those selected in the sample would be random and diverse. Those in the LGBT+ media have, however, called for greater transparency about how exactly these new methods and algorithms will work.
