Film Review: ‘Saturday Church’ delivers a moving musical about LGBT+ homelessness

Inspired by true events, Damon Cardasis’ Saturday Church follows Ulysses in the aftermath of his father’s passing. The shy and effeminate 14-year-old escapes his strict aunt and highschool bullies to the streets of New York City where he befriends a group of glamourous outsiders who take him to Saturday Church and introduce him to the ballroom scene.

The film covers the subject of gender-exploration and its intersectional link with the black community. It’s also a musical.

At times moving and poignant, the film rises above its more clumsier elements – the “evil” aunt is played awkwardly by Regina Taylor – to deliver an important story about acceptance and identity. You’ll either love or hate the musical aspects, which are haphazardly introduced at first before shining through with some truly beautiful moments – ‘Conditions of Love’ is a standout.

The movie is currently making the film festival circuit, with a general UK release expected later this year.
