First Openly Gay Footman Demoted for Receiving Too Much Publicity

The Queen’s first open gay footman has been demoted for receiving too much publicity in the gay press, The Sun reports.

Ollie Roberts made his first appearance as the Queen’s footman during the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London, marking the official birthday of the Queen. Roberts, 21, served in the Royal Air Force, and is openly gay.

Having an openly gay man in such a visible position in the royal service had been praised by many LGBT+ activists and is part of a conscious commitment from the monarch to be more LGBT-inclusive and to tackle discrimination.

However, Roberts was demoted after all the attention he received.

“Ollie was informed he had been overdoing the press stuff and they knew he was behind articles and gossip pieces,” an insider told The Sun.

“They told him his profile was becoming too high and he wasn’t there to draw attention to himself.

“He thought about it for a couple of days then decided he should quit. He feels badly let down when he was proud to be gay in such a good job.”
