First Same-Sex Royal Wedding Takes Place

The first ever same-sex royal wedding took place over the weekend in Devon, between the Queen’s third cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten and James Coyle, Harper’s Bazaar reports.

Mountbatten, 55, announced his engagement to Coyle, an airline cabin service member, back in June. Mountbatten came out as bisexual in 2016, but said he had always been open about it to his ex-wife, Penny. In a show of their good friendship, Penny gave Mountbatten away at the ceremony.

Mountbatten’s three daughters attended the event, but none of the immediate Royal family had room in their schedule to come. “Their diaries are arranged months in advance and they were not free,” Mountbatten told the Daily Mail, “but they adore James.”

Speaking about why he had decided to marry again, Mountbatten said, “I suppose if we had met ten years ago a civil partnership would have been nice, but now that marriage between a man and a man is legal it seems the right thing to do.

“I have had the whole marriage thing — and been very happy — but James hasn’t, so I see it as a validation of my love for him.”
