First transgender person has enrolled in US military after Trump’s ban fails

February 28, 2018

When President Trump announced via twitter last year that he planned to enforce a ban on all transgender troops from serving in the US military he was immediately met with controversy and scorn. Four different courts in the states issued rulings denouncing the decision allowing transgender men and women to join the military from January 1st this year.

It is reported that following these rulings Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis sent a memo to the Trump administration. While the contents of the memo have not been publically disclosed it is widely believed Mattis recommended that the ban be dropped.

This week the Pentagon issued a statement saying that indeed a Transgender troop has signed up since the memo was sent: “[The Pentagon] confirms that as of February 23, 2018 there is one transgender individual under contract for service in the US Military”.

Trump has yet to respond.
