As a mental health champion at work (and in my personal life) I recognise that mental health is as important as physical health. Government, charities, families, friends and the company you work for all play a critical role in protecting our mental health but importantly the responsibility also lies with us as individuals. But Zoe – I hear you say – how can I do this on my own when I have so many things going on at work and/or in my personal life?

Outlined below are a few ideas you can try, that may help you manage your mental health, just five tips that I have used and recommended to colleagues at work and at home:-

1) Sleep – We all need sleep to recharge and repair our bodies and that also includes our mind. If you are struggling to sleep, before you nod off, write down what's on your mind eg on a notepad close by. Then say to yourself – right, tomorrow is a new day so I will deal with it then.

2) Exercise – We all know that exercise can boost your mood and reduce stress. You don't need to run a marathon, just a 20min brisk walk will be fine. You could also think about doing an exercise video on YouTube, an online dance class, or get off the bus one stop earlier on your way to/from work? Join a sports club or another social group. You could run the marathon for Stonewall next year – you never know!

3) Get outside – This is one of my favorites. This can range from the local high street with all its hustle and bustle to the countryside. When outside, just focus your mind on what's around you – birds tweeting, trees rustling, sun shining, people chattering, the smell of the fresh fruit and vegetables in the supermarket, rain making big puddles, freshly mowed grass. This might help you switch off from what's on your mind and give you something else to focus on.

4) Practice self-care – Prioritise activities that you enjoy such as your favorite hobby. If you don’t have one find something and try it out. This website provides great opportunities to join events and services that may be of use to you. MindOut | Mental Health Charity for LGBTQ community

5) Talk about itThis is easier said than done, I know! Find a colleague or an ally at work who you feel comfortable with, and you could reach out to your mental health champions in your company . Or chat to a friend or family member outside of work. You can also call some great organisations externally such as Mind or Being Gay is Ok. Offloading what's on your mind. might bring you a sense of relief.

As a mental health champion, I've found these tips to be useful for me and others in the workplace. I really hope they work for you too.
