Procrastinating can be a dangerous habit, but like all habits it only takes a little patience and dedication to break. Here are five ways to stop procrastinating:
1. Reduce your project to little steps
One of the reasons we procrastinate is because we find the project in front of us overwhelming. A simple way to make it less overwhelming is to break it down into easier to manage steps. Then break those steps into smaller tasks. Then just focus on one task at a time.
2. Re-evaluate your work environment
Look at where you’re trying to work on your project – a study at home, a desk in the office. Does it make you want to buckle down and focus? Or is it distracting or making you want to curl up in bed? If you can, try working somewhere else, otherwise restructure your current workspace and make it both comfortable and somewhere you can focus.
3. Give yourself (multiple) deadlines
Having just one deadline for work is an invitation to procrastinate. It gives you the impression that you can just push everything back until then, often making you forget the little things that need to be done. Give yourself earlier deadlines for every task you need to accomplish within that deadline, making a detailed timeline for yourself.
4. Identify what’s making you procrastinate
If you are procrastinating a lot, it may be because you’re making it easy to do so. Look through your internet history and see what bookmarks are taking up a lot of your time, try putting them in a separate folder that’s less easy to access.
5. Tell others about your goal
Tell your friends and family about what you’re trying to achieve. Whenever they see you they’ll ask about your progress. It’s a great way to make yourself accountable.
