Football club suspends striker over homophobic comments

Wolfsburg has suspended striker Kevin Behrens after he made a homophobic remark during an autograph-signing event.

The incident involved the 33-year-old Behrens allegedly refusing to sign a special-edition Wolfsburg jersey featuring a rainbow logo meant to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The forward reportedly stated, “I won’t sign that gay c**p.”

According to ‘The New York Times’, Behrens, who has one international appearance for Germany, later issued an apology, acknowledging that his remarks were “absolutely not acceptable.”

A statement from the club read: “During an internal meeting, statements were made that did not align with VfL Wolfsburg’s values. The incident was addressed internally immediately. VfL Wolfsburg emphasizes its awareness of social responsibility.

“The club and its staff are committed to diversity and tolerance, with core principles such as respect, honesty, and openness being deeply embedded in the club’s ethos.”

Wolfsburg has not specified the duration of Behrens’ suspension.

On a page of their official website dedicated to diversity, Wolfsburg states they have consistently championed diversity and opposed discrimination for several years.

Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Nico Briskorn is quoted as saying: “In our actions and activities, football serves as a key element. This is because – regardless of gender, ethnic or social origin, sexual identity, religion, age, or disability – we can all get the ball rolling. We for you, and you for us.”

Behrens has participated in three Bundesliga matches for Wolfsburg this season but did not play in their 3-1 victory over Bochum last weekend.
