Gold-winning kayaker Sandra Forgues has come out as transgender. The former Olympian won gold in the Atlanta Summer Olympics and bronze in Barcelona. Speaking to L’Equipe she revealed she has struggled with her gender identity for years and only decided to transition a year and a half ago.
“Until then, I had a really successful social, family and professional life. I was engaged in a billion things. But my intimate life was in a prison. I always thought it would be one or the other.”
While Forgues is retired from the sport, trans people in the Olympics and in professional sports continues to be a controversial subject. The International Olympic Committee is continually updating their policies and revising its rules regarding hormone treatments. While Olympians now no longer have to undergo gender-confirmation surgery to compete.
