Former Uruguayan Diplomat Admits to Murder of LGBT+ Rights Advocate

Enrique Facelli, a former Uruguayan diplomat, has been detained after admitting to fatally stabbing Julian Aubrey, a prominent LGBT+ rights advocate, the BBC reports.

The two were neighbours and had a long-running conflict. Facelli used to serve as the cultural attaché at Uruguay’s London embassy, while Aubrey was the former co-chairman of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea LGBT liaison group. Aubrey has been recognised by the Princess Royal for his work counselling victims of sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say Facelli stabbed Aubrey 22 times in October 2017, believing him to be a devil worshipper trying to kill him.

Two different evaluations have since found Facelli suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Facelli has been sentenced to an indefinite period of detention in a psychiatric hospital.
