Fort Lauderdale elects openly gay mayor

In a special election on Tuesday, the American city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida elected Dean Trantalis, an openly gay man, as their mayor. The 64-year-old won 64 percent of the vote, soundly beating Republican opponent Bruce Roberts.

Trantalis has a history of public service, helping Broward County pass anti-discrimination laws for LGBT+ people.

Representative Debbie Wasserman tweeted her support: “Mayor-Elect Trantalis has a true passion for public service and fighting for civil rights, this is a massive victory for Broward County and the LGBT community nationwide.”

Trantalis’ sexual orientation only came up once in the election when his opponent sent out flyers of Trantalis in a tuxedo with make-up. Tratalis laughed it off, “These are outfits I would never be seen in.”

Trantalis will be sworn in on March 20.
