G-A-Y Bar closes its doors, owner cites loss in Soho's LGBT identity

G-A-Y Bar, a prominent fixture of London's LGBTQ+ scene, has closed its doors after its owner, Jeremy Joseph, cited a perceived decline in the area's distinct LGBT identity. The bar served its final customers on October 4th and 5th.

Joseph, in a statement posted on Instagram, announced it was "time to say goodbye" to the venue, expressing a desire to focus his efforts on Heaven nightclub in Charing Cross.

"I hope to continue making Heaven a second home for so many LGBT+ people," Joseph stated.

The decision to close G-A-Y Bar, as reported by the BBC, comes after a challenging period, including a temporary closure of Heaven nightclub earlier this year.

Joseph attributed the closure to a broader shift in the character of Old Compton Street, once considered a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.

"Old Compton Street wasn't just a street, it was a community together as one. But sadly that's not Old Compton Street anymore," he lamented.

Joseph expressed gratitude to Soho Estates, the landlord of G-A-Y Bar, for their support during the pandemic, including providing rent-free accommodation during closures. He acknowledged their understanding of the challenges faced in recent years, which led to their agreement to allow him to leave and concentrate on Heaven.

Earlier in February 2024, Joseph had revealed that Heaven's landlord, The Arch Company, sought to increase rent significantly. However, a rent review arbitration ultimately favored Heaven, ensuring its continued viability.

While acknowledging the closure of G-A-Y Bar as unwelcome news, Joseph emphasized that it would allow him to prioritize the preservation of Heaven as a vital space for the LGBTQ+ community.
