Gay couple attacked at Miami Beach Pride

A gay couple holding hands during the Miami Beach Pride Parade was viciously attacked by four men on Sunday evening. The four men, one wearing a Florida International University T-shirt, hurled a Spanish gay slur at the couple before punching them.

Police are calling the incident a felony battery, but are investigating as to whether it was also hate crime. One half of the couple told NBC 6 News that “for me, the way we were dressed and everything and we were together, it was like, ’Yes, it was a hate crime’. We probably provoked them because we were walking together, holding hands. It was gay pride; South Beach was full of gay people.”

Helmut Muller Estrada, who witnessed the attack and attempted to help the gay men said, “They almost killed this guy, literally.” He was attacked too and was knocked out when punched by one of the suspects.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight,” Estrada added, “we all should respect each other.”
